Venetian Harbor
The Venetian Harbor of Chania is a landmark that exemplifies the special beauty of Crete and honors its valuable history. This Venetian monument was built in the 14th century to protect the island from enemy raids. It features the Egyptian Lighthouse of Chania, one of the oldest lighthouses in Greece. The harbor is lined with charming, traditional shops, and its narrow alleys lead to the Old Town. Firkas Fortress
An impressive fortress from the Venetian era that is worth visiting. Its name has Turkish origins and means "division," as it served as the headquarters of the Turkish Division. The Firkas Fortress has a strategic location at the entrance of the Venetian Harbor, providing defense for the area. It is a monument of top historical significance, as it was from here that the Greek flag was raised in 1913 by the Prime Minister of Greece, marking the island’s union with Greece.
Venizelos Tombs
Crete continues to showcase its grandeur to this day, thanks to monuments like this one. The Venizelos Tombs are dedicated to Eleftherios Venizelos, the Prime Minister of Greece, and his son, who both made significant contributions to the island's history. Located next to the beautiful Prophet Elias Church, which is also worth visiting, the park housing the tombs features an impressive pine forest and offers panoramic views to all who visit.
Samaria Gorge
Crete's beauty is not only hidden in its historical sites but also in areas of stunning and rare natural beauty. One such place is the Samaria Gorge, located in the southern part of Chania. This 15 km long gorge allows you to experience the splendor of this blessed land, with rivers, lush vegetation, rocks, and spots with breathtaking views. Saint Nicholas Church
As you walk through the Old Town of Chania, you will come across a beautiful church near Splanzia Square, the Church of Saint Nicholas. This magnificent temple was built during the Venetian period and was an important part of the island’s religious life. During Ottoman rule, it was converted into a mosque and, after 1928, took on its current form as a Christian church. The interior of the church is quite impressive and unique, making it well worth a visit.
